Wreck-diving at the DOLPHIN mit Stellina Diving

The history of the motorboat DOLPHIN

The ca. 26 meters long Dolphin was constructed in the year 1956 in Berwick, Louisiana, USA. It is the sister ship of the HICKORY in La Caleta, which has found its eternal rest at the south coast of the Dominican Republic. At the end of July 2000, it has found its final anchorage. Accompanied of almost all diving-school-boats from Las Terrenas, the DOLPHIN was towed by a lighter to its final anchorage and was lowered in the sand in a depth of 27 meters near a little reef. There, it is nearly upright and can be visited easily. Because the ship was lying a long time in the water, the part of the hull, lying always under water, is already overgrown.

After a few days already, the first diving trips have taken place, and it could be observed, that the first inhabitants like shrimps and little fishes have found the way to the wreck. The trip to the DOLPHIN takes 10 to 15 minutes, depending to the waves.

To the history of the boat

In the years from 1956 to 1968 the DOLPHIN was used for the discovering of new oilfields in the offshore-region of the Gulf of Mexico. After that it was „engaged“ in the fishing-industry at the coasts of New Jersey. The Dominican company Caribe Salvage begans 1976 with the exploration and salvaging of ancient wrecks in the coastal area of the Dominican Republic. The first working-ship was the HICKORY, the sister ship of the DOLPHIN. 1984 the company Caribe Salvage with its president Tracy Bowden, donated the HICKORY, which at this time was already in retirement, to the archaeologist Pedro Borell. As a member of the Commission of Underwater Archaeological Salvage he saw to it, that the HICKORY was lowered in La Caleta at the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. So was created the first „underwater nationalpark“ of the Dominican Republic.
